Five young people including three from the area each will receive $1,000 college scholarships Saturday during the first Pittsburgh Sports & Fitness Festival at the Pittsburgh Expomart in Monroeville.

Lynn Swann, former Pittsburgh Steeler and chairman of the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, will present the scholarship awards in a ceremony at 1 p.m.

The students are Justin Schreiber, 14, of Carnegie; Anja Weisser, 9, of McKees Rocks; Devon Nguyen, 9 of Norwin, Westmoreland County; Nicole Plahs, 15, of Stahlstown, Westmoreland County; and Nichole Sullivan, 11, of Toledo, Ohio.

Kumite International, a nonprofit martial arts scholarship foundation based in Pittsburgh, awards the scholarships every year.

The awards will be part of the Kumite Classic National Martial Arts Championship, one of 10 events at the sports and fitness festival scheduled for Friday and Saturday.

"Colleges don't offer athletic scholarships for martial arts," said Bill Viola, founder and head of Kumite International. "Our goal is to provide scholastic scholarships and financial aid for deserving youth who excel in martial arts and give them the same opportunities that talented young athletes in other sports have."

Kumite Internationals founded KicKiss, the first and only non-profit karate rating association in the United States dedicated to competitive based karate scholarships. The unique program is one of the fastest growing rating systems in The United States, ranking the top competitors within the region.  The KI network expands throughout The United States, Canada, and Europe.  For the first time in history, karate athletes have a circuit of events to earn college scholarship and financial aid for school.

Leadership scholarships follow strict criteria which include an evaluation of academic performance, community service, leadership skills, competition performance, and martial arts experience.  Students who wish to teach karate in the future are encouraged to apply.  Requirements include a submitted essay and instructor nomination. These scholarships are reserved to current college students and high school senior members. Leadership awards are projected to be available for the 2011 academic year. You must be a member of Kumite International to apply or become eligible for scholarships.  Applicants must be full-time students accepted at an accredited college.

Kumite International is currently developing a number of celebrity scholarships.  The awards will honor some of Hollywoods top superstars and sport karate legends.  Projected date is 2008 KicKiss Season.  If you would like to nominate a celebrity or superstar, please send a letter or resume
